STASH MAGAZINE: What are DJ Romeo's Top 5 Frisco Songs:
San Quinn - shock the party I remember I was DJ'ing this ghetto ass club in Frisco and Quinn came up to me and handed me "shock the party" on a test press vinyl record. It was a plain white record with "shock the party" scribbled on it. I played it and the crowd went crazy! You would've thought it was a #1 hit on the radio. And this was before Quinn got any radio play. I had to play it 2 or 3 times that night. 11-5 - Garcia Vegas This song was so hot that it had everybody switching from philly blunts to garcia vegas. It took people awhile to realize that garcia vegas was a killer on your throat. Plus if you bought a stale one the green wrap would always fall off and roll uneven. You'll NEVER catch me smoking a vega again! Rbl posse- don't gimme no bammer weed I could've picked "bounce to this" but the entire bammer weed tape is a classic! And when I mean tape, I literally mean cassette tape! This came out before CDs. I was in elementary school playing this on a big ass walk man that took like 2 size D batterys! I think the walk man was bigger then me. Dre dog - smoke dope and rap Before there was Andre Nickatina and "ayo for yayo" there was Dre dog. I didn't really play this in the clubs. It was more of a smoke and ride song. I would NEVER in my life smoke a chewy, but I used to always sing that first line "I smoke chewy's like a muthafuckin nut!" If you play this song in Chico or Santa Cruz you're a fuckin hero. Bully with fullys - so hood I could have easily picked "JT game recognize game" or a cougnut song but I feel "so hood" will be a classic as well. Its over 1 year old and I still get screams when I play this. It got radio play but not too much, so it never really got "played out". For their CD release, I brought them out for one of my parties last year and over 1000 people showed up including MTV. Oh yeah and that was on a Tuesday night! http://www.stashonline.com ![]()
Ruckus Mag Mixtape Review
Ruckus Magazine reviews DJ Romeo's Bay Flavor 2. Tape is hosted by C-Murder live from jail. ![]()
1.how long have you been in radio and what inspired you to start?
Ive been in radio since 2001. I was always surrounded by radio DJs, so I knew thats what I wanted to do. 2.what do you think makes a good DJ? First let me tell you what a bad DJ is. A bad DJ is someone who is boring and sounds like a jukebox. There's nothing more boring to me than listening to a DJ using CD's mixing 8 bar to 8 bar to 8 bar and so on..ZzzzZZZzzz...There's nothing special about it, no creativity. No offense to anybody, but I view a good DJ as someone that can control and rock a crowd. Someone who is creative, a good mc, and an entertainer as well. A good DJ is a cat that is confident, but not cocky. 3.with the attributes stated in question 2, who do you think is a good DJ? Everybody has his or her own niche in the game. And the Bay Area definitely has its share of good DJs. Ill leave it as that. 4. Whats the most memorable experience in your radio dj career? Being bashed on the morning show a couple of years ago. One time I was DJing for the morning traffic jam and the morning host told me to play a Bay Area set. Then, 20 minutes later I got pulled from the air for playing too much Bay Area music. At the time they were the number 1 morning show with an average of 1.4 million listeners. Since then, the morning show has been released and we play Bay Area music all the time. 5. What advices to you give to DJs that are pursuing a successful career like yours that you wish you had received? Sacrifice. If you want to really do this, you have to sacrifice a lot of time. You have to be on the grind all the time. That means networking, being on the street, practicing and marketing yourself. Lastly, you have to want to DJ for all the right reasons. You cant be a DJ because you were a square in high school and now you want to be cool. Cmon now, you have to respect the art, history and craft of it. 6. What are you currently working on? I just finished the 4th installment of my bay area series mix tape, called BAY FLAVOR 4. Hosted by Bay Area Artist: Keak Da Sneak. Now Im working on a mix tape with PITBULL. On top of that Im working on a pilot for an artist takeover show for KYLD 94.9 7. When can they see you live? What events do you have coming up? On T.V. The WB network here in the bay area. On the distortion 2 static show www.distortion2static.com Clubs Jan 21st Las Vegas, NV. Official Morales vs. Pacioua after party Risqu @ Paris Jan 27th San Francisco, CA Freakquency w/ special guests Jason Richardson/Baron Davis Loft 11 Feb 10 Th Honolulu, HI. Official Myspace Pre-Probowl party Live performance by Petey Pablo Feb 12th Honolulu, HI. Official Myspace Post- Probowl Party Live performance by Chamillionare 8. Tell us about your local music scene. Who are the top artists? And how do you think it has evolved? Right now everyone loves Bay Area music. Bay Area music hasnt been this popular in years. The top artists out here are: Keak Da Sneak, E-40, Mistah FAB, Mac Dre (R.i.p), Balance and more. Right now its a whole movement that has evolved. Just like the south has Crunk, we have the HYPHY movement. E-40 just shot his new video with Lil Jon, and believe me the rest of the nation will finally see what were about. 9. What is a song that you hate to love? (guilty pleasure) John Legend, Maroon 5, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild and other cupcake songs when Im doing the graphic design thing. Im guilty. 10. Who were the biggest influences in your life? My brother Rob Reyes (M1 Promo) was a real big influence on me as a kid. He was a radio DJ at 106.1 KMEL and he always had good advice for me. Especially with career moves. My boy Gian Carlo (Climax Ent.) taught me the marketing/business aspects of the game. My cousin DJ Gary (HypeBay) influenced me how to grind on the street. 11. Websites? www.romeomix.com www.myspace.com/djromeo 12. What else do you do besides DJ? What are your typical work hours? Art director for Attention Hog media; Party promoter Typical work day is: 10 am to 4 am 13. When can people hear you on the radio? What station? And how did you become involved with the station? Weekends on KYLD 94.9 and 102.5 KDON I first got on KDON thru DJ Pleeze. He was on KDON at the time and I used to spin with him at clubs. He liked what he heard and referred me. As for KYLD DJ E-Rock introduced me to JAZZY JIM. At first I started out as a guest DJ. Then eventually worked my way up. 14. What has your experience on myspace been like so far? How did you first hear of myspace? Is there anyone or any group you would like to re-connect with? I love myspace. Im addicted to it like music. Like I told Rosalyn Cobarrubias from Myspace, When VH1 does a I love the @2000s Myspace will definitely be one of the things that they will talk about. I dont know if there is a group Id like to re-connect with, but Id Definitely like to connect with as many people as possible. 15.
